In continuation of my despatch No.280 of the 31st July, I have the honour to transmit for your consideration the enclosed copy of a letter addressed to me by the Honourable Mr. Wei Yuk, Senior Member of the Legislative Council, in reply to enquiries which I asked him to make into the financial position
of the widow and family of the late Sir Kai Ho Kai. I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the report. It is evident that for the present and until some of the late Sir Kai's sons can earn a good living the family must live on the charity of their relations and friends. Unfortunately the eldest son who is married to the daughter of Dr.Au Chak-man (alias Au Tak), a fairly well-to-do furniture dealer, is of weak intellect and of little assistance to the family. Fortunately Dr. Tu Ting-fong formerly Chinese Minister at Washington and father-in-law of Sir Kai's second daughter, is well off and will no doubt assist in maintaining the widow and large family of the deceased.
In view of Sir Kai Ho Kai's long and extremely useful service on the Legislative Council of the Colony and of the valuable services he rendered to this Government from time
to time, I desire, with the unanimous concurrence of the Executive Council, to recommend that this Coverment undertake the education of the 3rd, 4th and 5th sons at the llongkong University until they take their degrees, subject always to the report of the Vice-Chancellor that they are not wasting their time and are making good progress in their studies; and of the
